Coolant disposal in Irvine CA

Minimum Content Requirements
State agencies are required to purchase 70 percent postconsumer antifreeze (PCC antifreeze Opens a larger version of this image section 12209(g)).

This requirement applies to recycled antifreeze and antifreeze containing a bittering agent or made from polypropylene or other similar non-toxic substance.
At least 50 percent of the total dollars spent within this category must be used to procure products meeting the 70 percent postconsumer requirement.

For statutes specifically pertaining to antifreeze products, refer to the antifreeze products section on the Statutes Pertaining to the State Agency Buy Recycled Campaign.
Please see the SABRC section on the State Agency’s Laws and Regulation webpage for general, relevant SABRC legislation.
Recycling Antifreeze and its Benefits
In California, it is illegal to dispose of antifreeze in the trash, ground, or storm drains. The Department of Toxic Substances (DTSC) regulates antifreeze, because it is hazardous to public health and the environment.

Antifreeze is a mixture of water (3%), additives (2%), and ethylene or propylene glycol (95%). Ethylene and propylene glycols are manufactured from natural gas and crude petroleum, both of which are non-renewable resources. Recycling antifreeze conserves the earth’s limited natural resources by reclaiming glycol.
